Request for Proposals

The Office of Industrial Safety (OIS)  is seeking proposals from interested companies to facilitate the design and prototype development of a remote controlled, wheeled vehicle (RCWV) for the retrieval and transport of hazardous materials.

OIS's mandate includes the encouragement of local industry to develop design and fabrication teams and infrastructure with the capacity to meet present and future needs in this area.

RFP deliverables:

  • Systems prototypes will be delivered and demonstrated on Thursday August 2, 2012.
  • The specific systems will meet or exceed the design specifications as indicated in the design brief.
  • The system prototypes will be accompanied by an extensive design and fabrication portfolio (group) which documents the process undertaken by each of the competing companies. The Group portfolio will contain the daily logs of the individual team members which should be linked to the section where team members and their major area of "expertise" is documented.

    The portfolio should include a 10 minute, High Definition video showing the fabrication, construction and final prototype in operation. This video would be suitable as a promo for students interested in the RST3205 and/or IS1205 courses.
     
  • OIS will choose between competing designs for eventual production but will not be limited to a single company for the entire system. Based on the success of the individual prototypes, multiple companies may be invited to form a joint venture for the final production.

Design Brief

The RCWV must be able to operate over a minimum scale distance of 10 metres and have the following sub-systems:

  • Remote Control System: An IP based wireless system using the Phidget web service.

  • Propulsion System: consisting of four 12 volt geared DC motors with rubber wheels using a high current, pulse width modulated (PWM) controller.
     
  • Chassis: Aluminum frame chassis with Sintra decks (6mm)
     
  • Remote Manipulation: A remote manipulator arm with suitable gripping device.
     
  • DC Power: On-board, rechargeable, fused, 12 volt power source. A DC - DC step down voltage convertor may be needed if 5v devices are used. There should be a small electrical panel mounted on the device with:
    • on/off switch
    • fuse holder
    • banana jacks (for charging)
       
  • On-Board Sensors: The vehicle will be equipped with the following sensors:
    • Battery voltage sensor
    • Pan and Tilt camera (to control vehicle movement and monitor manipulator arm)
    • Front and Rear range sensors
    • Ambient temperature sensor
    • Contact sensor (to detect when gripper has made contact with the target)
       
  • Other On-Board Devices:
    • High brightness LED light, mounted to move with the camera
    • LED headlights
    • Horn/Audible device
       
  • Control and Sensing Interface: The remote  sub-systems will be presented, monitored and controlled using a  Graphical User Interface (GUI) developed in Visual Basic 6. The GUI will consist of at least 3 main forms including:
    • Menu form consisting of:
      • Company information (Splash Screen)
      • Project information - Short blurb on the various sub-systems and their intent
      • Control and Display Screen
      • Exit
         
    • Splash form including Company logo, team members (pictures?) and titles
       
    • Project form with information on each sub-system. Keep it to one screen (maybe a photo of subsystem and short blurb)
       
    • Control and Display form which will include but not be limited to:
       
      • Virtual joystick control for steering and speed (a USB joystick/controller will be used as well)
      • Manipulator arm may be controlled with on screen controls or mini joysticks external o the computer
      • Controls to turn headlights  on/off.
      • Control to turn on/off the Camera LED
      • Gauges  to show drive motor speed (in terms of the PWM controller position e.g. -100 to 100)
      • Battery voltage display
      • Motor current display
      • Temperature display
      • Range readout (Front and Back)
      • Horn
      • Indicator to show gripper contact
