Installing VB6 on Windows 7, 8 or 10

Follow the steps below to get the original VB6 running on all current versions of windows.

STEP 1 - Install VB6

Start by compying the contents of the Microsoft Visual Studio 6 CD to a folder on a portable drive or on Drive C: of your computer (You need to modify and re-save a file and you can't do that on a CD)

In the folder containing the contents of the CD find the file setupwiz.ini (It is in the root of that folder) and open it with notepad

Search down through the file and find the line VmPath=ie4\msjavx86.exe

Change this line to VmPath=

Save the file.

Stay in the root folder where the CD contents are stored and Right-click SETUP.EXE, select Run As Administrator.

Ignore any warnings, click Run Program.

Click Next.

Click "I accept agreement", then Next.

Enter key, name and company information, click Next.

Select Custom Setup, click Next.

Click Continue, then Ok.

Setup will pause for a minute.

On the options list, select the following:

       Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0
        ActiveX
        Data Access
        Graphics

All other options should be unchecked.

Go back and highlight Data Access and select Change Options.

Uncheck the first option (ADO,RDS and OLE DB providers) and click OK. Ignore any warnings!

Click Continue, setup will continue.

Finally, a successful completion dialog will appear, at which click Ok. At this point, Visual Basic 6 is installed.

If you do not have the MSDN CD, clear the checkbox on the next dialog, and click next. You'll be warned of the lack of MSDN, but just click Yes to accept.

Click Next to skip the installation of Installshield. This is a really old version you don't want anyway.

Click Next again to skip the installation of BackOffice, VSS, and SNA Server. Not needed!

On the next dialog, clear the checkbox for "Register Now", and click Finish.

The wizard will exit, and you're done. You can find VB6 under Start, All Programs, Microsoft Visual Studio 6. Enjoy!

You might notice after successfully installing VB6 on Windows 7, 8 or 10  that working in the FORM is sluggish.

After installing VB6, you'll want to change the compatibility settings for the vb6 executable.

Using Windows Explorer, browse the location where you installed VB6. By default, the path is:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VB98\

Right click the VB6.exe program file, and select properties.

Click on the Compatibility tab.

Place a check in each of these checkboxes:

Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
        Disable Visual Themes
        Disable Desktop Composition
Disable display scaling on high DPI settings
Run this program as an administrator

Click the Change settings for all users button and do the same as above!

STEP 2 - Apply a service pack (SP6) and then a cumulative update

Use the following link ( below) to download a zip file that contains both updates. Make sure you install the service pack 6 first (you will see sp6 in the filename).

Make a folder on your hard drive (call it VBUpdate or whatever). Double click this file and extract the files to the folder.

Browse to this folder and right click on the setupsp6.exe file and select run as administrator.

When the service pack finishes its install, run the cumulative patch (VB60SP6-KB2708437-x86-ENU.msi).

VB6 Update

When the service pack and update are installed there is one last step. If this is not done, common controls and the Global Majic custom controls may not run!

STEP 3 - Register Controls

Open a command prompt with administrator privileges (right click on the command prompt and select run as administrator). Type the following and press enter:

regtlib msdatsrc.tlb

Finally you need to run VB6 as administrator and draw the controls once on a form. That way the "users" on the same machine can access the controls.

Note: For anyone doing Integrated Systems 1205 some of the activities use a folder named VBIMAGES. You can download this folder below as a zip file which can be extracted and placed under c: The EZVIDCAP camera control is also in this folder. Install it by running the registration bat file.
